Joan Elliott

Some, actually many, have called me a renaissance woman -- its all in the eyes of the beholder.
To me, any description is another "pigeon hole" and I'd rather not be "classified and categorized'. With that said, I just do what I do.
I totally get how I could create skin care that actually remedies problems. I see how I could write a great novel and not just want to (someday). I know how I can paint -- or photograph -- or cook -- or hand craft silver and gold jewelry --or even figure out how to do something I have never done before and have it work. Its my way and always was. I have accepted it --oh la!
I now paint watercolor because I like the challenge. "Sculpting with water" is how I do it. I challenge the paint to perform in multi-dimensional detail where intensity and articulation result in gem-like, color-filled, wild and free, imaginative still life settings, landscapes, seascapes.

I compose uplifting, decorative images from my imagination. I seek depth through transparency. I seek to capture qualities that are compelling, well-composed and balanced.
Watercolor leaves little room for error or correction, so, when I paint, I focus intense concentration, knowing that each stroke counts and will be seen. The compositions are meant to be "a dance for the eyes".
I embed the "canvas" (400lb Arches 21x28" is my standard "comfort zone" ) with intensity not usually found in watercolor. I have lived in cities where art is everywhere. Now I live at the beach and art is everywhere still.
They say I have a strong signature style. Colorful, bold and commanding, fanciful and lyrical while remaining serene and calm. I sometimes question if I know what the hell I am doing. But, after over 50 years of experimentation and practice, I have developed a certain "style" --
I am considered a "non-conformist". I tend toward solitude while I work and pray and attend to my day.
I love it when people love my work!
I am grateful to God, mostly -- and to my supporters, my collectors, my fellow artists.

I live by the beach and welcome you to my studio/gallery - located off Gulf Blvd between Clearwater and St. Pete Beach -- Call for an appointment.
